RunOregon, meet Jessica Mumme, Half Fanatic #2635.
She's been an official Fanatic since last year, after running three half marathons between April 15, 2012 and June 17, 2012: the Corvallis Half, the Portland Rock 'n' Roll Half, and the Vancouver USA Half. She's currently working on "perfecting" her half marathon speed and moving into the longer distances - marathons and even ultras. She hopes to be a "double agent" - both a Fanatic and a Maniac!
Mumme lives and works in Eugene, working for the City in their Finance Division. Originally interested in earning her Maniac credential first, she found that the 13.1 distance fit better in her work/life balance. "I am able to fulfill not only my career obligations, but my family obligations on the half marathon training schedule, as well," Mumme says.
One of the reasons cited by many Fanatics for loving the club is the members themselves. Mumme mentions one runner in particular, Queenie Zook. "[She] is so active on the Facebook forum for Half Fanatics, and she posts awesome pictures of her unique race outfits. I really enjoy following what she is up to."
Becoming a half fanatic requires a lot of running - it's not easy to run three half marathons in just about 8 weeks! Mumme has found that running helps calm her, "in an otherwise chaotic world." Her running idol is Scott Jurek, who has shared much of his running experience with other runners. "I have been working on implementing his suggestions to ultra runners, but making it fit for my half marathons," Mumme says. She also learns a lot from reading information by experts, advice she passes along to other runners looking to step up their training regiment or distance.
Another unique thing about Mumme is how she chooses which races to do. "I prefer hills," she says; she also considers the swag - mainly the race shirt (tech preferred!) and the finisher medal. The price is also important - it has to be under $100. If the race has hills, tech shirts, a great medal, and a good price - "I am definitely in!" she says.
