On Saturday, December 14 near Eugene, Oregon, the sixth event in the Run Big Trail Series will take place. The Frozen Trail Runfest will start at 9 a.m. (for the 50k, 10 a.m. for all other race distances) at Buford Park-Mt. Pisgah. Mt. Pisgah is located just a couple of minutes south on I-5 from the University of Oregon. The start and finish line will be located at the horse arena - watch for signs to help guide you.
This race really is for anyone; from the ultra distance runners that I so adore, to the short distance trail racers, or those wanting to experience trail running for the first time. Specifically, you have the option of racing in the 50k, 15 miler, 9 miler, or 5k distance. Just beware that the 5k distance, although the shortest in length, is going to be a legitimate challenge! During the middle of the race, you will head straight up Mt. Pisgah! It'll be a blast, but just know and be prepared for the challenge.
The 9 miler is a one-loop course climbing around 900 feet. The 15 miler is two-loops, climbing approximately 800-1000 feet. And the 50k is a four-loop jaunt, with an elevation gain near the ballpark of 800-1000 feet.
On December 14, expect trail conditions to be frozen -- but if not frozen, keep in mind the trail will likely be really hard (partially frozen). Also, be mindful that the flat sections are likely to exhibit wet, muddy running conditions.
Aid stations are supplied for all race distances. Check out the official course maps (linked above) to map out the aid that will be supplied to you, and make any personal adjustments that you may need to pack in with you to get you to the finish line happy. The nourishment you will find at the aid stations is water, GU Brew, GU gels, KIND bars (these are awesome!), light snacks, and first aid for any ouchies.
Make sure to get registered prior to the event (no later than December 13 at 12-noon) to save some pennies. If you decide the morning of the race that you want to get out there and crank out some miles, you can sign-up race morning from 8:30 a.m. 9:45 a.m. Remember, the 50k starts at 9 a.m., and the other distances begin at 10 a.m. For an additional $10 you can add an event tech-shirt to your race shirt stash. See you at the races!
